Karel Van Cauteren

Private guide in Brussels and Flanders

Belgium looks different when you let a Belgian tell the story

I'm Karel. A Belgian, a private guide, and the grandson of a man who could talk about this country until the coffee went cold.

Most of what I know was either handed down or collected myself. The handed-down part came from my grandfather: holidays in Flanders, roaming the countryside for old bunkers and military cemeteries, and the small stories that rarely make it into the history books. The collecting part came from stacks of dusty books, hundreds of museum visits, family records, boxes of black-and-white photographs, my brewing classes, years behind various bars and a beer company of my own.

I don't hand you a route and a raised umbrella. I take groups of eight at most, past the queues and into the local heart of the country: history, culture, architecture and beer, poured story by story. You tell me what catches your eye, and I'll compose the tour around it, the way a brewer brews a beer. To your taste, and unmistakably Belgian.

If you want to see Belgium, any guide will do. If you want to understand it, you'll want a Belgian.

Who I am

A Belgian who never quite got over his own country. During the week I have another life. At the weekends I'm a private guide in Brussels and Flanders. I am the type who will stop mid-sentence to tell you that this country was rebelled into existence at the opera. A whole country, born of a good night at the theatre.

My knowledge sits on four pillars. History, inherited from my grandfather and then chased far beyond the two world wars. Culture and architecture, read through maps, street grids and architectural styles, from baroque splendour to the elegant curves of art nouveau. Beer, which I've studied, poured and brewed, and which tells you more about a town than its museum does. And the local part, which isn't so much a pillar as the ground the other three stand on.

You won't be choosing between a dozen near-identical options here. There's one guide, and he answers his own messages. Tell me what you're curious about, and I'll tell you honestly whether I'm the right person for it, and if I am, what we should go and see.

What I do

Eight people at most, two to six hours, on foot or by car. I take small groups into the Belgium the Belgians keep to themselves. I collect you and take care of the rest: the route, the timings, the tickets, the table at the right café. You spend the day being curious instead of navigating. That's the whole arrangement.

Some tours follow a subject. Other tours have no subject until you give me one. Tell me what you'd like to see, or simply what you find interesting, and I'll compose something around it. I'd rather build the right day for four people than run the same day for forty.

What you won't get is a studied script. I've never told the story of this country the same way twice, because the group in front of me is never the same either.

The guests are

the Tour

That's not a small thing. Churches are sanctuaries of peace and quiet before they are anything else, and a smile or a kind word to a local showing you his trade is the whole of good manners. It's how I was raised, and it's how I walk through the world. My tours are the same: full of respect for the people who open their doors, and for the places we're guests in.

And then there's you. I'm as interested in what fascinates you as I am in what fascinates me. Which stories stir you, which buildings catch your eye, what you'd like to understand by the end of the day. Tell me, and the tour bends around it. Arrive a tourist and leave a guest!
